PRODUCT FOCUS: Organic Layers Mash

As public demand for organic eggs continues to grow, we are receiving more and more enquiries from new and established free-range egg producers wanting to find the right organic diet for their laying flocks.

Specialist organic poultry feed suppliers

Humphrey Feeds & Pullets is the leading UK supplier of organic poultry feed, including over 85 organic poultry diets. We are one of the few feed manufacturers able to supply high quality organic mash, thanks to our expertise and investment in specialist equipment.

Organic ingredients

The quality of a flock’s organic diet has a direct impact on its health and welfare. To provide the best support for the birds, we carefully select and balance organic raw materials, based on their specific nutritional needs according to their age and production requirements, whilst ensuring that the feed is palatable and cost-effective.

All our organic feed is free from:

  • genetically modified ingredients

  • pesticides

  • chemically treated grains

  • land animal by-products

  • antibiotics

Organic mash for layers

Mash is the most suitable feed form for laying birds – if fed pellets the birds can tend to eat too much, compromising their nutrition and potentially leading to excessive egg size. The grist of any mash must be carefully managed to be attractive to hens and to encourage slow consumption which will assist digestion, whilst allowing good control of ingredients.

However, the texture and nature of some organic raw materials can make the mash difficult to grind effectively. At Humphrey Feeds & Pullets we have solved this problem by investing in a flexible grinder, which means we do not need to compromise on ingredients.

The benefits of precision grist

Our flexible grinder can produce 18 different grist qualities, including a bespoke organic mash. This is crucial for the effective grinding of some ingredients.

For example, we source high quality wheat from warmer climates because the lower moisture content carries less potential for mycotoxins, which can damage bird health. This wheat is drier and can splinter when ground. Some feed producers have chosen to increase the level of vegetable oil in the diet to compensate for this and appear to provide the right texture – but this is not good for laying flocks as it introduces excess linoleic acid which over-stimulates the birds, producing excessive egg size which causes stress.

Humphrey Feeds and Pullets’ flexible grinder is capable of managing this drier ingredient more effectively, providing uncompromising organic mash without the unnecessary expense and harmful effects of added oil.

Bespoke ingredient control

Humphrey Feeds & Pullets organic mash can also incorporate ingredients such as additional calcium where required. This means that rather than calcium being tipped on top of feed bins as an afterthought, extra ingredients are formulated as an integral part of the mash - making them available to the whole flock in healthy and consistent proportions.

A better organic mash

Our organic poultry mash is made fresh to order to give your flock the right balance of nutrition, energy and performance. We do not use variable or inconsistent by-products, do not cut corners, and are proud to offer the most consistent feed grist found in the UK.

Our poultry specialists are ready to help you choose the best organic mash, whether you are new to organic farming or want guidance finding a better organic feed for your birds.
